WordPress is set to expand its web offerings with a new top level domain name for people who want to customise their accounts.
The service, which is used by bloggers and developers alike, has added .CO to its range of personalised URLs that already include .COM, .NET, .ORG and .ME.
Both .ME and .CO are country code top level domain names (ccTLDs), with the former officially assigned to Montenegro and the latter to Colombia.
These extensions make domain names more specific so that you can get a web address that reflects your goals.
In fact, ccTLDs are an increasingly popular way to get unique web addresses and .CO and .ME are both becoming more common choices.
While .ME is used by the likes of Visa, Google and Time Inc, .CO is used by Twitter, Startup America and Go Daddy and has had over a million domain names registered since 2010.
Choosing A Domain Name With WordPress
If you are an existing WordPress user, you can register domain names by going to your dashboard, clicking on “Store” and choosing the “Domains” option. Then you just have to type in the web address you want and follow the prompts.
Having another option like .CO means you could still get all your key words into the web address even if a more common extension, like .COM or .NET, is already in use.
For example, if you wanted to have the phrase “domain name news” in the web address but found that domainnamenews.com was already taken, you could see whether domainnamenews.co is available. The same applies for any of the other extensions offered by WordPress.
Registering a .CO or .ME domain name on WordPress costs $25 (USD) per year, while .COM, .ORG and .NET start from $18. WordPress also gives you the option of making the domain name registration private for an extra $8.
Mapping a domain name you already own, on the other hand, costs $13 per year.
